Rogue River Fly Fishing

Southern Oregon's Rogue River Fly Fishing Resort

Fly-Fishing For Steelhead

Morrison’s expert fly-fishing guides use casting and nymphing as their main techniques. Although all guided fishing is boat supported, much of the fly-fishing is done via wading. Early in the season guides use nymphing techniques with heavy weighted flies and light nymphs. Later in the season during the Chinook spawn, egg patterns with nymph droppers work incredibly well. For those who do not wish to wade, casting from the boat is also an option.

Spey Casting

Spey Fishing is the newest trend in fly fishing. For the experienced anglers who wish to expand their skills and tap into an exciting new fishing experience, learning the art of Spey Casting can be a real thrill. Once learned, the Spey casts can produce - without a back cast - consistent casting distances of 75 to 140 feet. Anglers can benefit in using these wonderful rods to make shorter casts as well.

Morrison's carries a selection of Orvis' new two-handed fly rods and would like to introduce them to our guests this fall. These two-handed fly rods are fun and take less effort to cast the same amount of line as a single handed rod, enabling the angler to present and control the fly at longer ranges and greater depths in large Salmon & Steelhead rivers than do single hand rods. In addition, you can fish through the day without getting tired!

This beautiful and graceful technique entails a push-pull type of motion, which uses leverage to propel the rod tip at tremendous speeds, requiring very little effort to cast a large amount of line. This is a distinct advantage when covering big rivers like the Rogue. The grab of a Steelhead on a swinging fly is like no other take. Casting beautiful loops over classic runs like the Rogue River is as close to nirvana as a Steelhead angler can get! If you've never fished with a Spey rod be forewarned; you may become addicted!

Not a Fly-Fisher Person, No Problem

If you are not a fly caster, and don't want to break a sweat or get your feet wet, we can still accommodate you and get you into prime Steelhead. In the early days on the Rogue just about everyone fly-fished by back trolling wet flies. You may have heard of the "Rogue River Twitch", which is still used today. This technique allows guests to sit at the front end of a guided drift boat with fly rods pointed out over the bow, while the guide maneuvers the boat back and forth across the river in fast moving water right above the prime fishing spot. Several times a minute you give your rod a twitch to give the fly some action. Wet flies or attractor patterns are used for this technique, which can be incredibly effective and requires no casting skills on the part of the fisher. Conventional gear fishing is also available.

    Comments:

We had a super time in every way! Bryce is a very competent boatman/oarsman and a knowledgeable steelhead guide. The fishing was a bit slow but we caught great fish!
Thank You

What if You Don't Want a Fly Fishing Guide

If you choose to fish on your own there are some good choices for you close to the lodge. During the fall Morrison's keeps a jet sled at the beach to take fly fishers to some good wading water close to the lodge. We will drop you off for a couple hours of fishing and pick you up at a later time. This option is only available when river conditions are appropriate. There are also great wading spots within 10 - 20 minutes driving distance of the lodge. If you haven't fished the Rogue, we do suggest a guide for at least the first day of fishing, as those Steelhead can be wily.

When to Book Your Guided Fly Fishing Trip

We suggest that you plan early to make your reservation. Many guests make their reservations as much as a year ahead. We still have good availability for the fall season, but that may not last long and weekends will book up fast, so we encourage you to make you plans as soon as possible. If you haven't planned ahead, don't give up. Please give us a call as there may be a cancellation for the time you wish.
